National averages (approximate) are rounded from Census of Governments finance data for local governments: schools about 55%, public safety 14%, roads and public works 8%, parks and libraries 5%, health and social services 5%, debt interest 5%, administration 5%, other 3%.
Where to find your own budget: search "[your city] adopted budget" or "[your county] annual comprehensive financial report", or look up your jurisdiction at the Census Bureau's State and Local Government Finance tables.
Property tax is split among your county, city, school district and special districts, so a single city budget may cover only part of your bill. For the full picture, paste each budget separately and compare.
